Immigration: Rally in Solidarity with Families Affected by Polimigra

August 2, 2017 @ 4:30 pm

Show our support for the families and speak out against the detrimental long term impact when local law enforcement collaborates with immigration.

On the morning of June 29, 2017, a yet-unidentified trooper stopped a vehicle in Penn Yan, ostensibly because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Although the officer was not ticketing the passenger, he asked him for identification, which he did not have with him. The trooper let the driver go on his way with a ticket but arrested two Latino passengers and took them to a State Police barracks in Dundee, and held them for immigration officers to assume custody. Both passengers are now facing deportation.

The State government has opened an investigation into this incident. While we applaud them for opening this investigation, we are also calling for that investigation to be transparent, in depth, timely, and ultimately hold the trooper accountable to a clear violation of the their policy. This is especially important since this is not the first time they have violated the policy. The 2014 Executive Memorandum regarding Immigration Law-Alien Proceeding states: “As applied to vehicle passenger-Even when you stop a vehicle containing a passenger who you believe may be an illegal alien, you have no authority to request or demand identification documents from a passenger.”

This incident is just one example of how a single decision made by a one law enforcement agent can separate a family, deport a dedicated worker, and send a chilling effect to the entire immigrant community. We call for that trooper to be held accountable for his actions.
